Call Out

The Storytelling Choir is seeking 5 performers to take part in a Rewilding Cinderella project to co-create a wild story concert of lesser known Cinderellas.

For this Arts Council funded project, we are looking for performers interested in building performances around lesser known Cinderella (ATU510) variants. We are particularly seeking storytellers, spoken word poets and songwriters, but are also open to applications from artists who work in other mediums.

Participants will join storytellers already bringing stories from Scotland, Bulgaria, India, Haiti and the Czech Republic to create a woven tapestry of forgotten Cinderella tales. We are aiming to create our final performance both in live and digital format. Working in partnership with Brighton-based arts charity, ONCA, the live performance will take place on ONCA’s barge, as well as outdoors at a local rewilding site.

The work we are inviting artists to develop is a 2 – 15 minute story, song or spoken word poem. These pieces will be developed via a series of online sessions between January and March 2022, during which time all artists will share their narratives, build their individual performances and co-create the final concert.

As an exploration of stories too often left outside of mainstream narrative, we particularly welcome applications from artists who have experienced racism, artists who identify as LGBTQIA+, artists who are disabled, neurodiverse artists and others whose voices are underrepresented within the arts. We recognize that exclusions are often intersectional and welcome all those whose voices speak to the complex multiplicity of the Cinderella narrative.

Our focus will be both on celebrating the forgotten diversity of the Cinderella tale type, and on exploring the ecological impulse of the tales. We’re particularly interested in shifting the story away from the heteronormative structure of ball, shoe and prince, and more towards transformations of reality via human and non-human kinships.

All artists will receive £400 for their participation in workshops and co-creation of performance, plus a further £150 for the facilitation of one online workshop session with other artists. Travel expenses will also be covered.

We also have available £150 for co-facilitation of workshop sessions on Cinderella variants with young people; please let us know in the application if this is something you would be interested in being involved with. Sessions will take place at Varndean College in Brighton during February and March 2022.

3. Contribution to the co-creation of the final performance, weaving together individual pieces within a wider story frame, both in digital and live format.

4. Facilitation of one workshop, sharing with other artists your own approach to and experiences of the story variant with which you are working.
